FAQs
Is this credential issued by Swing or the NJ Department of Education?
This is issued by the New Jersey Department of Education! The full name of the credential is the "Instructional Substitute Credential."
In fact, you complete all your application materials on the NJEdCert platform. We have simply put together a comprehensive guide to help guide you through the process.
We know applying for these things can be tricky sometimes, so the guide should help simplify things for you!
How long is the Instructional Substitute Credential valid in New Jersey?
It's valid for 5 years from your issue date!
I recently completed a background check for NJ. Do I need another one for this application?
If you have already completed a background check with the New Jersey Department of Education Office of Student Protection within the past 5 months, you can use the same background check to apply for your credential!
This means, if you have recently set up with Swing Education (in the last 5 months) or are in the process of setting up your Swing account and you have an approved background check, you don't have to get another one!
If your background check is older than 5 months, however, you will have to complete a new background check. We will send you instructions on how to complete a new one.
Can I teach without a credential?
You do not need a credential to be a substitute teacher in New Jersey, but having one unlocks more opportunities for you.
On average, credentialed subs have access to 3x the jobs and 15% higher pay rates through Swing.
How do I qualify for the $200 incentive?
You will need to complete your Swing setup and work at least 4 days through the platform in order to qualify.
Once you get your credential from the New Jersey Department of Education make sure to do these 2 things as soon as possible:
- Send a copy of your credential to nj-permits@swingeducation.com so we can update your account.
- Log into your Swing account and start accepting requests! Once your account is updated with your credential, you should be able to see more opportunities around you!
I submitted all my materials to the NJEdCert platform. Why haven't I heard back?
You will receive an email from the New Jersey Department of Education once your credential has been issued, if there is a problem with issuing your credential, or if it is denied.
If you have submitted everything, however, and it has been over 2 weeks, please email nj-permits@swingeducation.com and we will try to help you.
