FAQs

Is this permit the same as the Emergency Permit offered by the CTC?

Yes! The full name of the permit we’re offering is the “Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit.”

Your permit will be issued by the CTC. The only difference is, your application will be submitted by a school district partner or County Office of Education, which will allow you to get your permit more quickly.

How long is the 30-Day permit valid?

It’s good for one year, and renewable every year.

So, why is it called a “30–Day Permit”? Because, with a 30-Day Permit, you can teach for as many schools as you like – but no more than 30 days for any single request. Learn more here.

Do I still need to take a CBEST to get this permit?

Not anymore! As of 6/29/2024, official transcripts showing the conferral of a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university satisfies both the degree and basic skills requirement.

For a list of regionally accredited universities, please view this page on the CTC website.

Can I teach without a permit?

You can! Any jobs you see on your Swing account, you can sign up for. However, having a permit unlocks, on average, 2x as many jobs and 20% higher pay rates.

Did you know: half of all substitute jobs in California require a permit. As long as you don't have a permit, we automatically hide them from your account, because you wouldn't be able to accept them anyway. Once you have it, we unhide them!

How do I qualify for the $150?

Onboarded subs will get a $150 stipend after they receive their permit and submit their receipt!

Save your receipts! Once the CTC approves your application, you will receive an email with the subject line: “Notification of Credential Issuance.” When you get this email, make sure to do 3 things as soon as possible:

  1. Forward the “Notification of Credential Issuance” email to permits@swingeducation.com so we can update your account.
  2. Note the permit document number, issue date, and expiration date. You will need to submit it with your receipts below.
  3. Submit your permit-related receipts to our receipt collection form.

Don't forget: if you started and received your permit while onboarding with Swing, you need to finish your onboarding before receiving the $150!

I submitted all my materials to your SwingCert partner. Why haven't I heard back?

County Offices of Education (COEs) and/or our school district partners often receive a high volume of applications. If you haven't heard back in 2-3 weeks about your application, please let us know by contacting contacting us at permits@swingeducation.com!

That said, it's also important to get all your materials completed quickly. If you delay in getting your Live Scan or ordering your transcripts, our SwingCert partners won't be able to submit your application for processing. Make sure to get that done as soon as possible!
